How to use Passport Photo Maker

  1. 1Drop a front-facing photo taken against a plain light wall, then choose your country and document.
  2. 2Drag and zoom the photo until the top of your head touches the red line and your chin sits inside the green band.
  3. 3If the wall looks grey, raise Whiten light background, and adjust brightness and contrast if needed.
  4. 4Download the single photo at 300 DPI or the online upload size, or pick 4 x 6 in, A4 or Letter and download the print sheet.

Sizes and head rules included

  • United States passport and visa: 2 x 2 in (600 x 600 px at 300 DPI), head 1 to 1 3/8 in from chin to top of head, white or off-white background.
  • United Kingdom: 35 x 45 mm, head 29 to 34 mm. Online applications need at least 600 x 750 px, so the digital download is 700 x 900 px.
  • EU and Schengen visa, Japan, Australia, South Korea: 35 x 45 mm with a head of 32 to 36 mm.
  • India passport: 35 x 45 mm with a 630 x 810 px digital version and white background, as in recent notices from Indian missions. India visa: 2 x 2 in.
  • Canada: 50 x 70 mm, face 31 to 36 mm from chin to crown.
  • China visa: 33 x 48 mm, head 28 to 33 mm tall, with a 354 x 472 px digital version.

Rules change, and some agencies add requirements this tool can't check, such as expression, glasses, shadows or how recent the photo is. Official acceptance always depends on the issuing agency, so confirm the current rules on its website.

Using the head guide

The red line marks where the top of your head (including hair) should be. The green band shows where your chin may sit; anywhere in the band gives a head height inside the allowed range. The oval and the dashed center line help you center your face. Zoom changes the head size and dragging moves it; use Straighten if your head is tilted. Keyboard users can nudge with the arrow keys and zoom with + and -.

For the background, the best result comes from a plain white or light wall with even light and no shadows. The whitening slider brightens light, low-color areas to white. It is a simple adjustment, not background removal, so a busy or dark background needs a new photo.

Printing the sheet

The sheet places as many copies as fit, with grey cut lines just outside each photo, at 300 DPI: 8 copies of a 35 x 45 mm photo on 4 x 6 in, or 30 on A4. Order the 4 x 6 file as a normal photo print at a pharmacy or photo lab, or print the A4 or Letter file at home at 100% / actual size, not "fit to page", so the photos keep their exact size. Measure one copy with a ruler before you cut them all.

Frequently asked questions

Will my photo be accepted?

The tool gives you the correct size, pixel dimensions and head framing for the preset you choose, but acceptance depends on the agency's rules and on the photo itself: lighting, expression, glasses and background. Check the official requirements before you submit.

How do I print passport photos at home or at a store?

Download the 4 x 6 in sheet and order it as a standard 4 x 6 photo print, or download the A4 or Letter sheet and print it at 100% scale on photo paper. Then cut along the grey lines.

What size is a US passport photo in pixels?

2 x 2 inches, which is 600 x 600 pixels at 300 DPI. The State Department accepts digital photos from 600 x 600 up to 1200 x 1200 pixels. This tool exports 600 x 600 px at 300 DPI.

Can this tool remove my background?

No. It can brighten a light wall to white with the whitening slider and adjust brightness and contrast, but it does not cut you out of a busy background. For best results take the photo against a plain light wall.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The cropping, adjustments and sheet are all made in your browser, and the photo never leaves your device.

The online form also has a file size limit. What should I do?

Download the single photo or online upload size, then use Compress Image to 50KB or Resize Image to KB to bring it under the limit without changing its pixel size.
