How to use Create ZIP File

  1. 1Drop files into the box, or click Add a folder to include a folder with all its subfolders.
  2. 2Type a name for the ZIP file, or keep the suggested one (the folder's name when you added a folder).
  3. 3Pick a compression level: No compression, Normal or Maximum.
  4. 4Click Create, then Download. The result shows the original size, the ZIP size and how much was saved.

Which compression level to choose

  • Normal works well for documents, text, code and spreadsheets.
  • Maximum squeezes a little more out of text-heavy files but takes longer on large folders.
  • No compression is best for photos, videos, PDFs and other files that are already compressed. The ZIP will be about the same size either way, and this option is much faster.

The tool warns you when most of your files are already compressed, so you do not wait for nothing.

Folders and file names

When you use Add a folder, the folder structure is kept inside the ZIP, so whoever opens it sees the same layout you had. If two files have the same name, the second one is renamed to name (2).ext instead of being overwritten. Each file keeps its original modified date.

Privacy and limits

The ZIP is built in your browser with no upload, which also makes it fast on slow connections. The whole ZIP is held in memory while it is created, so the practical limit depends on your device: a few GB on a desktop, less on a phone. ZIP files made here open with Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android without extra software. Password protection is not available yet.

Frequently asked questions

How do I zip a folder?

Click Add a folder, choose the folder, then click Create. All files and subfolders are added with the same structure.

Why is my ZIP almost the same size as the original files?

Photos, videos, MP3s and PDFs are already compressed, so ZIP cannot shrink them much. ZIP still helps by bundling many files into one download.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit, but very large selections depend on your device's memory. Desktop browsers handle several GB; phones handle less.

Can I add a password to the ZIP?

Not yet. If you need an encrypted archive, 7-Zip (Windows) or Keka (Mac) can create AES-256 protected ZIP or 7z files.

Will the ZIP open on a Mac or phone?

Yes. It is a standard ZIP file that macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android can open with their built-in tools.
