How to use Excel to CSV

  1. 1Drop an XLSX, XLS, XLSB or ODS file into the box.
  2. 2Tick the sheets you want. Click a sheet name to preview its first rows.
  3. 3Choose the encoding, delimiter and line endings, plus the number, date and empty-row options.
  4. 4Click Download CSV for one sheet, or Download as ZIP for several. The download icon next to a sheet saves just that sheet.

Which encoding should I choose?

  • UTF-8 with BOM (default) is the safe choice when the CSV will be opened in Excel. The three-byte BOM at the start tells Excel the file is UTF-8, so accented letters, Korean and Japanese display correctly instead of as garbled characters.
  • UTF-8 without BOM is what most databases, programming languages and web services expect. Use it for imports into MySQL, PostgreSQL, Python or Google Sheets.
  • CP949 / EUC-KR is the legacy Korean Windows encoding that some older Korean business and government systems still require. Characters that do not exist in CP949, such as emoji, are replaced with ? and the tool tells you how many.

Values as you see them, or full precision

By default each cell is exported as Excel displays it: 1,234.50, 12% and dates in their format. Large whole numbers in General format are written in full instead of as 1.23457E+13, and the short date format follows your page language (2024-01-15 on the Korean page, 1/15/2024 on the English page). Turn on Full-precision numbers to get plain values such as 1234.5 and 0.12 for importing into other software, and Dates as YYYY-MM-DD for unambiguous dates. Leading zeros stored as text in Excel are always kept.

Several sheets at once

Most converters only export the first sheet. Here you can tick any number of sheets and get them in one ZIP file, each CSV named after its sheet. Hidden sheets are listed with an icon and start unticked. Semicolon, tab and pipe delimiters are available for European locales and for data that contains commas. Need the opposite direction? Use CSV to Excel, or Excel to PDF for a printable copy.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my CSV show broken characters in Excel?

Excel assumes a legacy encoding when a UTF-8 file has no BOM. Choose UTF-8 with BOM, the default here, and Excel opens it correctly.

Can I convert all sheets at once?

Yes. Tick the sheets you want and click Download as ZIP. Each sheet becomes its own CSV file inside the ZIP.

Are formulas exported?

CSV files hold values only, so each formula is replaced by the value Excel last calculated and saved in the file.

Does it work with old .xls files and LibreOffice files?

Yes. XLS (Excel 97-2003), XLSB, XLSM and ODS files are supported. Password-protected workbooks must be unlocked in Excel first.

Is my workbook uploaded?

No. The workbook is read in your browser and the CSV files are created on your device.
