How to use AVIF to PNG

  1. 1Drop your AVIF files into the box or click Choose files.
  2. 2Leave Background on Transparent to keep transparency, or pick white, black or a custom color.
  3. 3Optionally turn on Shrink large images.
  4. 4Click Convert to PNG.
  5. 5Download each PNG, or Download all (ZIP).

When PNG is the better target

Choose PNG when the AVIF is a logo, icon, sticker, screenshot or product cut-out with a transparent background, or when you will keep editing the image. PNG is lossless and is accepted by every editor, slide program and website builder. For photos you just want to share, AVIF to JPG gives much smaller files.

How to save an AVIF image as PNG from a website

When you right-click an image on a website and choose Save image, you often get an .avif file even if the page looked like it showed a normal picture. Drop that file here and you have a PNG within a second. Converting a whole folder works the same way: select all files at once, convert, and click Download all (ZIP).

Transparency and file size

Transparent pixels stay transparent, including soft edges and shadows. If you prefer a solid background, choose white, black or any color under Background. PNG files are usually several times larger than the AVIF, because AVIF uses lossy compression and PNG does not. The list shows the size before and after for each file.

Privacy and compatibility

  • Images are decoded and saved by your browser; nothing is uploaded.
  • Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16+ decode AVIF natively. Older browsers load a small decoder automatically.
  • Animated AVIF files give their first frame.
  • HDR or 10-bit AVIF images are converted to standard 8-bit PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Does AVIF to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. With Background set to Transparent, which is the default, transparent areas stay transparent in the PNG.

Is the conversion lossless?

PNG keeps the decoded AVIF pixels exactly. Any loss happened when the AVIF was created, and converting does not add more.

Why is the PNG bigger?

AVIF uses strong lossy compression. PNG is lossless, so the same image takes more space. Shrinking large images reduces the size a lot.

Can I convert AVIF to PNG on my phone?

Yes. The tool works in current mobile browsers on iPhone and Android.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser.

Can I convert to JPG on the same page?

Yes. Switch Output format to JPG for much smaller files. Transparent areas are then filled with the background color you choose.
