How to use Extract Audio from Video
- 1Drop a video into the box. MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and AVI work.
- 2Choose MP3, M4A or WAV. The M4A option tells you when it can copy the original audio without re-encoding.
- 3For MP3 or M4A, pick a quality if it is shown.
- 4Click Convert, listen to the preview and download the file.
Which format to choose
MP3 plays on every phone, car stereo and app. Choose 192 kbps for most uses or 320 kbps for music.
M4A is AAC audio, the format most videos already use inside. When the video's sound is AAC, the tool copies it straight into the M4A file without re-encoding. That is instant and the sound is bit-for-bit identical to the video. M4A plays on iPhone, Mac, Android and Windows.
WAV is uncompressed 16-bit audio for editing in Audacity, Premiere or a DAW. It is large, about 10 MB per minute in stereo.
Private and fast, even for long recordings
Lectures, meetings and concerts are often long files. Uploading them to a website takes time and hands your recording to a stranger. Here the audio is extracted on your device and only the audio track is read, so a full-length video usually finishes in under a minute.
Just want MP3? MP4 to MP3 is the same engine with fewer choices. Want the video without sound instead? Use Mute Video.
Common uses
- Turn a recorded lecture or meeting into an audio file to listen to on the go.
- Get the music or narration out of a video to reuse in an edit (choose WAV).
- Send a voice recording that was filmed on a phone to someone who only needs the sound.
- Feed audio into transcription software, which often prefers M4A, MP3 or WAV.
The output file name is based on the video's name, so it is easy to find in your Downloads folder.
Frequently asked questions
Which format keeps the best quality?
M4A when it can copy the original AAC audio (the tool says so), or WAV, which stores the decoded sound without further loss.
Does it use FFmpeg?
Most of the time it uses your browser's built-in audio and video engine. For formats the browser can't handle, it uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly (GPL, source linked at /tvid/FFMPEG-NOTICE.txt), a one-time download of about 10 MB that then stays in your browser cache.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The audio is extracted inside your browser.
What if the video has no sound?
The tool checks this when you add the file and tells you before you start.
Can I extract audio from an AVI or MKV file?
Yes. Formats the browser can't read itself are handled by the FFmpeg engine.
How long does it take?
Copying AAC into M4A is nearly instant. MP3 and WAV need decoding and, for MP3, encoding; on a laptop an hour of audio usually takes well under a minute with the built-in engine. The progress bar shows a time estimate and you can cancel at any time.
