How to use Convert to WebP

  1. 1Drop JPG, PNG, GIF or other images into the box, or paste one with Ctrl+V.
  2. 2Set the quality. 80 is a good starting point for websites.
  3. 3Optionally turn on Shrink large images and pick 1280, 1920 or 2560 pixels.
  4. 4Click Convert to WebP, review the size saved, then download one file or a ZIP of all.

Why WebP for websites

WebP files are usually 25 to 35 percent smaller than a JPG of similar quality and much smaller than PNG for photos, while still supporting transparency. Smaller images load faster and help page speed scores. Every current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can show WebP.

Getting the smallest files

The biggest saving usually comes from the image dimensions, not the format. A 4000 pixel photo shown in a 1200 pixel column wastes most of its bytes. Turn on Shrink large images and pick a size close to how large the image is displayed, then adjust quality.

The results list shows original size, new size and the percentage saved for each file, plus a total for the whole batch.

Limits

  • Animated GIFs become a still image of the first frame.
  • Encoding uses your browser's built-in WebP encoder. Very old Safari versions (before 14) cannot create WebP and will show an error.
  • Images are never uploaded. Very large files depend on device memory.

Frequently asked questions

What quality should I use for WebP?

75 to 85 works well for most photos on websites. Use higher values for images with fine text or sharp edges.

Does WebP keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent PNG images stay transparent when converted to WebP here.

Can I convert animated GIFs to animated WebP?

Not with this tool. Animated GIFs are converted to a still WebP image of the first frame.

Do all browsers support WebP?

All current major browsers display WebP. Some older desktop apps and email clients still do not, so keep a JPG copy if you need to share files widely.

Are my images uploaded?

No. They are converted on your device by your browser.
