How to use Extract GZ Files
- 1Drop a .gz, .gzip or .tgz file into the box.
- 2For a single compressed file, check the compressed and decompressed sizes, then click Download.
- 3For a .tar.gz or .tgz, browse the files inside, preview them, and download what you need, or download the plain .tar.
What a GZ file is
GZIP compresses a single file, for example access.log.gz or data.csv.gz. It is common for server logs, database dumps and data downloads. Many GZIP files remember the original file name, and this tool uses it when it is there.
To compress several files, they are usually bundled with TAR first, giving a .tar.gz. This tool detects that and shows the files inside, so you do not need a second tool.
Tips
- Text files such as logs and CSVs can be previewed before you download them.
- Files that were compressed in several parts and joined together (multi-member GZIP) are handled.
- .xz and .tar.xz files can be opened here too.
Privacy and limits
Decompression runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. A GZIP file can expand to many times its size; the decompressed data must fit in your device's memory, so very large logs work best on a desktop computer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open a .gz file?
Drop it on this page and click Download. You get the original uncompressed file.
Why does my .gz file contain a .tar?
A .tar.gz is a TAR bundle compressed with GZIP. This tool unpacks the TAR automatically and lists the files inside.
Can I open .gz files on a phone?
Yes. Open this page in your mobile browser, choose the file, and download the result.
Is it safe for log files with private data?
Yes. The file never leaves your device; all decompression happens in the browser.
What is the difference between .gz and .zip?
A .gz file holds one compressed file and is common on Linux and servers. A .zip can hold many files and folders and is common on Windows. Both open on this site.
