How to use Unlock PDF

  1. 1Add the protected PDF. The tool checks its security settings straight away.
  2. 2If it opens without a password but is restricted, click Remove restrictions.
  3. 3If it needs a password, type the open or owner password and click Unlock PDF.
  4. 4Download the unlocked copy.

What it can and cannot do

This tool decrypts PDFs that use the standard password security: RC4 40-bit, RC4 128-bit, AES-128 and AES-256. For files that need a password to open, you must know that password; it does not guess or crack passwords. Files protected with digital certificates or third-party DRM cannot be opened.

Restricted PDFs

Many PDFs open without a password but block printing, copying or editing using an owner password. These are still encrypted. The tool tells you which actions are blocked and can remove the restrictions so the copy behaves like a normal PDF. Only do this for documents you have the right to use this way.

Nothing is re-rendered

Decryption restores the original content exactly: text stays searchable, links work, and image quality is unchanged. The password is checked locally and is never sent anywhere. The new file is named like statement-unlocked.pdf.

Frequently asked questions

Can I unlock a PDF without the password?

Only if the file opens without a password and is merely restricted. If a password is required to open it, you need that password.

Which password should I enter?

Either the password you use to open the file or the owner (permissions) password works.

Why does it say the password is wrong?

PDF passwords are case-sensitive. Check Caps Lock and your keyboard layout, and watch for spaces copied along with the password.

Is my password or file sent to a server?

No. Both stay in your browser; the decryption happens on your device.

What encryption types are supported?

RC4 40 and 128-bit, AES-128 and AES-256, which covers PDFs made by Acrobat, Word, banks and most other software.
