How to use Compress Images in ZIP
- 1Drop a ZIP file that contains JPG, PNG, WebP or BMP images.
- 2Pick a level: High quality, Balanced (recommended) or Smallest.
- 3Turn on Convert to WebP if you want even smaller files and the people using them can open WebP.
- 4Click Compress images. When it finishes, check the before and after sizes per image, then download the new ZIP.
What happens to each file
- JPG, PNG, WebP and BMP images are resized to the level's maximum width or height and re-encoded. BMP images become JPG.
- If an image would not get smaller, the original is kept, so the new ZIP is never worse.
- GIFs are copied unchanged so animations are not lost.
- Documents, videos and all other files are copied unchanged, in the same folders.
Choosing a level
Balanced limits images to 2048 pixels on the long side, which is plenty for screens, websites and email. High quality keeps up to 3000 pixels for printing. Smallest goes down to 1280 pixels, good for email attachments and upload forms with tight limits.
Convert to WebP usually saves another 25 to 35 percent and keeps transparency, but file extensions change to .webp, and some older software cannot open WebP.
Privacy and limits
Images are compressed by your browser and never uploaded. Up to 500 images per ZIP are supported. Photo metadata such as camera details and GPS location is removed from compressed images. Password-protected ZIPs must be unlocked with the Unzip tool first.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will the ZIP get?
For typical phone photos the Balanced level often saves 60 to 80 percent. Images that are already small or optimized change less.
Are non-image files changed?
No. PDFs, documents, videos and any other files are copied into the new ZIP exactly as they were.
Does it keep my folder structure?
Yes. Every file keeps its folder and name. Only the extension changes if you choose WebP conversion.
Why was an image kept as the original?
When compressing would make a file larger, for example a small or already optimized image, the original is kept.
Can I compress PNG screenshots?
Yes. PNG images are resized to the level's limit and re-encoded. For the biggest savings on screenshots, turn on Convert to WebP, which keeps text sharp at a much smaller size.
