Your study group shares the lecture slides and past papers for the semester as course-pack.7z. Everyone else seems to be on Windows. You are on a school Chromebook, the Files app does not know what to do with it, and you cannot install anything.

7z is the native format of 7-Zip, a free Windows program that compresses very well, which is why people like it for big bundles. The official 7-Zip only exists for Windows, but you do not need it to open a .7z file.

The short version: drop the file onto Extract 7z in your browser. The archive is decompressed on your device, and you can download one file, a selection, or everything. It works on Mac, Chromebook, iPhone, iPad and Android, and password-protected 7z files work too.

Step by step

  1. Open Extract 7z and drop in the .7z file. The file list appears once the archive has been read.
  2. If it is password-protected, type the password and click Unlock. Archives that hide their file names show the list once the password is right.
  3. Browse folders, search by name, and preview images or text with the eye icon.
  4. Untick anything you do not need, then download single files, download the selection as a ZIP, or in Chrome and Edge use Extract to a folder.

Nothing is uploaded. That matters for the study pack only a little, but a lot for archives of tax documents, photos or work files.

A worked example: the course pack

course-pack.7z: 420 MB, password-protected by the person who made it, with folders for each week.

  • Drop it on Extract 7z, type the password from the group chat, click Unlock. The folder tree appears: Week-01 to Week-12, plus Past-papers.
  • You only want the past papers for now. Untick everything else and click download the selection as a ZIP.
  • The first download takes a little while; after that, the rest of the files from the same block come out instantly.

A file the Chromebook cannot open, and no way to install 7-Zip.

The past papers in your Downloads folder in a couple of minutes, nothing installed.

Why the first file can take a moment

7z archives are often solid: many files are compressed together as one block, which is why 7z files are so small. The downside is that to get one file out of a solid block, the whole block has to be decompressed first. So the first download from a large archive takes longer, and later files from the same block are instant. It is normal, not stuck.

On a phone or an older laptop, close other heavy tabs before opening a big 7z. Decompression happens in memory, and archives up to about 1 GB can be opened depending on how much your device has free.

What is supported

  • The compression methods 7-Zip uses for its normal and Ultra settings: LZMA, LZMA2, BCJ and BCJ2, Deflate, Delta and Store.
  • Compressed file lists and solid archives.
  • Password-protected (AES-256) archives, plus less common methods such as PPMd and BZip2, which are handled by a second engine that loads automatically when needed.
  • Every file is checked against its CRC checksum, so a damaged archive is reported instead of quietly giving you broken files.

Split archives (.7z.001, .7z.002)

Large archives are sometimes split into numbered parts. These need joining before they can be opened, and that has to happen in desktop software: 7-Zip on Windows, or Keka on a Mac. If you can, ask the sender for a single archive, or for several smaller independent archives instead of one split one.

Sending files back to the group

If you need to share your own notes with the group, a ZIP is the friendliest choice, because every computer and phone opens it without extra software. Create ZIP packs files or a whole folder in your browser, folder structure included.

Is it safe to open a 7z file?

Opening and browsing an archive does not run anything. The care is needed with what is inside. Use the preview to check that files are what they claim to be before you download them, and be suspicious of programs (.exe, .app, .dmg, .bat) inside an archive that was supposed to hold documents or photos. Something like notes.pdf.exe is a classic trick: it is a program dressed up as a PDF. If an archive came from someone you do not know, the safest option is not to open its programs at all.

Common problems

"Wrong password"

7z passwords are case-sensitive. Check Caps Lock and watch for spaces copied along with the password from a chat.

"Data error" or "CRC failed"

The archive is damaged, usually from an interrupted download or upload. Download it again; if it still fails, ask the sender to re-upload it.

It is actually a ZIP or RAR

Extensions sometimes lie. The archive tools here detect the real format from the file, so Unzip opens ZIP, RAR, TAR and GZ files from the same drop box.

Quick answers

Can I open a 7z file on an iPhone?

Yes. Open the tool in Safari, tap the drop area, pick the file from Files, and save what you need.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The archive is read and decompressed entirely in your browser.

Can I create a 7z file here?

Not at the moment. Create ZIP makes standard ZIP files, which are easier for most people to open anyway.
